From an ecological standpoint, the oarfish is a relatively common creature in our oceans. Oarfish tend to live in temperate and tropical waters around the world. Usually though, their habitat is about 3,000 feet from the surface, meaning human encounters with the fish are incredibly rare.

Which makes the two giant oarfish encountered by a group of tourists in Mexico all the more extraordinary. Usually when humans find oarfish in the shallows, they are dead or badly injured. Fortunately, these oarfish were very much alive.

Sadly, according to this movie-taking mom, we may have an oarfish suicide on our hands. Or maybe he”s just soaking up some rays. Hopefully it”s the latter.

Incredibly, certain species of oarfish can grow up to 36 feet long. Unfortunately, we don”t know what happened with these oarfish once the cameras stopped rolling. We hope they were able to make their way back to the deep waters of their natural habitat.
